How to critically analyse a photograph:
Denotations - what you can physically see in the image.

Ex. In this image a woman is poised looking towards the floor with her arm held next to her head. She has kicked back one leg to exaggerate the abundance of fabric in the dress she is wearing. The image is in black and white as if to emphasise the tones and shades of the woman's dress and herself.
Connotations - What you can imply from the image.
The woman is bent forward with her hand on her temple, this is usually a jester done in pain or exasperation. Her body language also shows that she is poised and tense. The photographer may have asked her to make this pose as it shows how dancers have to have complete control of their muscles and so the woman would have to stay deathly still for a few seconds so the photographer to get the shot she wanted. The image may have been shot with stage lighting as this would have enabled a faster shutter speed and meant that the photo captures the movement and the direction of the fabric.
Punctum - (latin - a sharp implement) something within an image that personally effect the viewer on a deep personal level. Everyone's punctum will be different as it relates to the individuals own feelings.
The woman looks like she is in pain, either emotional or physical. The bent back wrist and the arm thrown back suggests that she's suffering; if you look alongside her neck you can see the muscles that jump beneath her skin as she commands them which will probably be very strenuous.
Studium - Our first response to an image. The shallow emotions that we experience without reading into the deeper meaning of the image other than that which reflects of our own interests. (General likes or dislikes).
This image shows that the dancer is graceful despite the pose being difficult to perform.
